Ministry of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture The Belize National Celebrations Commission 2009 held official ceremonies yesterday in St. George’s Caye to mark the opening of the official calendar of events for the 2009 September Celebrations under the theme, ‘Diverse Origins, Common Aspirations...Together we celebrate as Belizeans.’
Chairperson of the National Celebrations Commission and Minister of Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture, Hon. Manuel Heredia gave the main address at the opening. The Minister spoke on the significance of deciding to hold the opening ceremony on St. George’s Caye as a sign of honor to our forbearers. He also mentioned that the official Independence Day Ceremony and traditional uniform parade held for a majority of the years in Belize City will now be held in the City of Belmopan. In closing, the Minister invited all Belizeans to celebrate in, "this special time of the year…as we all usher in an exhilarating series of events for all Belizeans home and abroad…in this month that showcases the spirit of patriotism in Belize." Minister Heredia also congratulated Mrs. Velda Wade Hill for her winning theme entry for the 2009 September Celebrations. A certificate was handed over to the Community Council Chairperson, Mr. John Searle Jr. to proclaim St. George’s Caye as an official historical site. A presentation on the historical significance of St. George’s Caye was done by Dr. James Garber and Dr. Jaime Awe.The day’s activities concluded with the unveiling of the 2009 September Celebrations Logo and the presentation of its countrywide programme of events.
